Fruit Vendor
In the market, the fruit vendors are the most colorful among the others, they bring the products from all the corners of Peru. Thanks to the different climates in Peru, we can have several fruits throughout the whole year. This work reminds me of my mother when she went every morning to the market pushing her tricycle with the fruits. I was 5, but I remember when she gave me bananas and apple to eased my hunger until we come back home.

The Artist: Nicario Jimenez born in a peasant community in the high Peruvian Andes, Nicario Jimenez studied sculpture at the Centro de Capacitacion Artesanal de Huamanaga and attended the Universidad Nacional San Cristobal de Huamanga in Ayacucho, Peru. His one person exhibitions include the San Francisco Craft and Folk Art Museum, the Cleveland Institute of Art, the Museum of Man in San Diego, California, the North Dakota Museum of Art, and the Rhode Island School of Design.

His work was selected by the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. for its "Seeds of Change" Exhibit and was subsequently purchased by the Smithsonian for its permanent collection. Nicario has taught and lectured at the University of Miami, the University of California, San Diego, Whittier College and American University. Jimenez's work is included in numerous prestigious public, corporate, and private collections. The artist now lives in Naples, Florida.

Flowers In the Market
In a popular market, the florists are usually local people who cultivate flowers at their house. Most of these flowers are very traditional and some specific for some festivities. Near the carnival the flowers are bought or picked up by the young girls who want to decorate their hats to show their availability in the fiesta. Colorful and well arranged flowers will announce when somebody is engaged or has a suitor. The Retama is one of the traditional flowers and is used mostly in the holy week. It is a symbol in Huanta, Ayacucho-Peru of the years of struggle and terror in the 90's.

Mask Maker Workshop
This is a representation of the everyday work of the artisans preparing the masks for the upcoming carnival. The masks represent different deities, regional and local. The demons in the Andean beliefs are not always bad luck, the word "devil" didn't exist in the Andean world until the arrival of the Spanish; they used that word to name to the obscures Andean deities. There are also some earth-type demons which can live with the humans. The main Andean deities are the Condor, the Jaguar and the Amaru (two heads snake).

Day of the Dead Bar
November 1st and 2nd are the main days where every family in the Andes remembers their loved ones. In this Retablo, I show the enjoyment loved ones are having in the other world. They live their lives as they were in life, as they remember, when they went to those bars to continue the fiesta. They go to the cantinas to quench their thirst with "chica de jora" (fermented corn), "agapito" (fermented agave) and tequila. And of course, the harp and violin can be left out since they will dance until they are tired to death.
